
This Higher National Diploma is a qualification that has been developed to prepare people for employment in Social Care. It is a particularly useful qualification for those intending to pursue higher education in Social Work, Applied Social Studies, Sociology and Psychology. The qualifications provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector. BTEC Higher Nationals offer a strong emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding in the sector. Learners are attracted to these strong vocational programmes of study that meet individual progression needs whether this is into employment or to further study on a degree or professional course.
To gain an HNC award a student must complete 8 units, with a further 6 units required to achieve the HND qualification. Students should expect to spend at least 20 hours a week on their studies including class room lectures, directed self study and private study on assignments. The College operates a system of 4 terms each year, each with 10 weeks of taught classes. Students will usually expect to study 3 or 4 units during each term.

Assessment takes the form of written assignments, observations, in-class tests, verbal assessment and projects
To gain the unit learners must achieve, as a minimum, the Pass grade; the Pass grade is in effect the gaining of the credit for the unit, and this contributes to the overall qualification grade. All units must be passes within the rules of combination to achieve the overall qualification.
